About Me
I was six when a sugar cookie altered my world. I remember reaching to grab a cookie in a pastry box, but I have no memory of what happened next.
I was told that, although I didn't eat the cookie, the pistachio dust from a macaron in the box caused an anaphylactic reaction. I was diagnosed with an "off the charts" sensitivity to tree nuts. My life was forever changed when my allergist warned me that "just a speck of a tree nut could cause your heart to stop."
I wish I could be a typical carefree teen excited to grab a treat at Starbucks or Crumbl Cookie. Instead, I go with them and cautiously scan our table for any crumbs left behind by a bag of nuts or a granola bar. The epi pen in my bag isn’t guaranteed to save me, so I put my hands in my pockets and wait for my friends to finish. While they eat, I daydream about the delicious, NUT FREE treats I will try to make when I get home.
Although I wouldn't wish my allergy on anyone, I believe the challenge has made me a more thoughtful, empathetic and appreciative person. Through constant observations of my surroundings, I have realized that we all have obstacles to surpass, and our attitude towards those challenges matters. My story may be unique, but the fact that I have one makes me like everyone else. My story and my desire to make a difference are what inspired me to make this blog. I hope my stories leave you feeling less alone, proud of your differences, and inspired to find your own ways to give back.
